The Growing Islands Project explores ways to stop coastal erosion and sea-level rise

The Self-Assembly Lab has developed a solution to help coastal communities combat beach erosion. The Growing Islands Project, a collaboration between the Self-Assembly Lab and Invena, a company in the Maldives, are working together to grow beaches in the Maldives. The man-made structures are placed strategically into the water and interact with wave patterns and natural flow in the ocean.

"While the title of the project is Growing Islands, the objects actually have three distinct potential uses: the first is to construct all-new islands. The second and third Tibbits says are probably more immediately relevant: supporting existing islands and beaches."
